The Turtle Island of Zakynthos
Marathonissi, the Turtle Island, or as the
locals call it - Caretta caretta - is one of the many beautiful and
and unique natural secrets of Zante. Lying to the south of the island,
opposite the small harbour town of Keri Limni, it is home to turtles
protected by conservation law. One of the secrets of nature is without
doubt the shape of the island, which really does look like a turtle.
The turtle lay their eggs in the white sand on the west side. Divers
around these wonderful waters often meet these splendid creatures
that enjoy accompanying them on their way. The rare species is protected
by both Greek and international law.
